Responsibilities

Investigate, research and prepare child support cases for civil litigation and enforcement; handle appeals of routine child support civil cases; prepare trial briefs and check questions of law; present opening statements, interrogate and cross examine witnesses; argue points of law, and make final arguments or summations
Present and litigate child support cases in the Superior and Municipal Courts; conduct interviews to obtain or give information; interview and advise law enforcement officers and the public in regard to the issuance of routine child support establishment complaints and enforcement actions; advise and train non-attorney child support staff on matters of law, policy and procedure
Negotiate with attorneys and litigants regarding the disposition of civil actions or modification of charges in specific cases; conduct legal research in specific areas of civil and family law; analyze legal issues in pending cases
Prepare correspondence and reports; review progress and development of cases with supervisory deputies; process child support complaints and claims for the County of Riverside Department of Child Support Services

Required

Active membership in the State Bar of California
Possession of a valid California Driver's License
Must be able to pass an extensive background check
Knowledge of legal principles and their application
Knowledge of rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings
Knowledge of the laws of the State of California
Ability to analyze legal problems and apply legal principles and practices
Ability to present arguments and statements of fact and laws clearly and logically in written and oral form
Ability to perform legal research
Ability to work cooperatively with others

Preferred

Bilingual in Spanish
Experience in child support, mediation or conflict resolution, social services, family law, bankruptcy, worker's compensation, and enforcement of judgments

MEDICAL/DENTAL INSURANCE: A Flexible Benefit Credit is provided on a monthly basis as governed by the Management Resolution or applicable bargaining unit.
Vision coverage is provided through Vision Service Plan (VSP) at no cost to employee or eligible dependents.
MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
ANNUAL LEAVE (Bi-Weekly Accrual): 0 < 36 months = 8.92 Hours 36 to <108 months = 10.46 Hours 108 or more months = 12.00 Hours
Maximum Annual leave accumulation is 2,080 hours. Employee may receive pay in lieu of up to 40 hours per calendar year. Agency/Department Head may approve an additional 40 hours.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.
401(a) MONEY PURCHASE PLAN: County contribution of $50 per pay period towards choice between two 401(a) plan providers.
HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 days can be taken through use of accrued leave balances)
BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY (LTD): Benefit pays 66.67% of earnings to a maximum of $10,000 per month; 30-day waiting period; pays to age 65. Benefit can be coordinated with other available leave balances to provide up to 100% of pay.
POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the Management Resolution or applicable bargaining unit.
