Dave Kennedy Fellow - Summer 2026
The Institute for Justice is offering the Dave Kennedy Fellowship summer program, which provides law students the opportunity to engage in civil-rights litigation. Fellows will conduct legal research, develop litigation strategies, and draft legal documents for state and federal court cases.

Responsibilities
Conduct legal research
Help develop litigation strategies for active and potential cases
Help draft discovery requests, motions, and briefs filed in both state and federal court
Developing and helping to launch a case against abusive zoning enforcement
Researching and drafting a section of a federal appellate brief on a First Amendment challenge
Presenting a proposal memo to IJ’s litigation team
Drafting portions of an appellate reply brief in an ongoing property rights case
Traveling with IJ attorneys to meet with potential clients
Researching appellate court treatment of FTCA actions
Reviewing body camera footage from traffic stops
Participating in moots for dispositive-motion hearings and oral arguments
Developing litigation strategies for potential challenges to licensing requirements
Qualification
Required
Law student
Ability to conduct legal research
Ability to help develop litigation strategies for active and potential cases
Ability to help draft discovery requests, motions, and briefs filed in both state and federal court
Strong communication skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Interest in civil rights litigation
