San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Student Intern Program, Summer 2026 – 5380 Engineering Intern (Level 1)

Responsibilities

Developing design alternatives for transportation projects
Performing field visits
Preparing traffic control device work orders
Drafting in AutoCAD
Preparing striping drawings for official records
Estimating project costs for traffic striping, signage, signal, and civil work scope
Analyzing signal timing
Reviewing construction work zones and site plans
Supporting public outreach
Preparing legislation
Supporting the evaluation of the E-bus pilot program
Participating in design review
Project planning and engineering maintenance support for electrical distribution utility
Supporting the Cable Car systems, storage tank systems, elevator/escalator systems and a variety of other transportation infrastructure

Required

At the time of submitting application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college pursuing a degree in one of the following fields: Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or Transportation Engineering
Possess a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree in one of the above fields from an accredited university or community college AND be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college pursuing a degree in a related field
You must be currently enrolled and continuing in an associate, undergraduate or graduate program or entering/continuing a graduate program in the Fall 2026
Students enrolled in second-to-last or last semester and will soon graduate are also encouraged to apply as you may still be selected for the program within six months of graduation
No previous experience is necessary

Preferred

Interest in public-sector careers in transportation, especially public transit, walking, and bicycling
Understanding of the impact of transportation decisions on marginalized communities, including people of color, people with low-incomes, and people with disabilities
Experience working with marginalized communities
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, including, but not limited to, examples drawn from: school, work, community activities, extracurricular activities, team sports and/or volunteering experiences
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively
Ability to adapt to new situations, changing priorities, or unexpected challenges to meet project goals
Ability to analyze evidence, critically consider options, and draw conclusions from data
Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and/or transportation)
Applied knowledge of Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or other software
