Mortgage Underwriter

Responsibilities

Adhere to all ACB policies and procedures
Review credit applications on various types of loans; analyze applicant’s financial status, credit and property evaluation, corporate tax returns, personal tax returns, personal financial statements, credit reports, business reports and legal documents. Perform credit analysis, analyze appraisals and approve or deny credit applications per authorized lending limits. Recommend credit decisions to management on requests exceeding assigned lending authority
Use discretionary judgment for approval of credit applications not meeting underwriting policies and procedures. Ensure proper documentation and sign-offs are made for credit exceptions. Maintain credit exception approval percentages within corporate approved guidelines
Ensure all secondary market requirements and other investor requirements are satisfied for loans to be sold
Verify the accuracy and consistency of the Loan Origination System in regards to properly assigning rates, initiating appropriate disclosures, following system parameters and that the calculations for DTI, LTV and credit are correctly populating
Maintain up to date knowledge of current Underwriting policies, guidelines and compliance issues using available resources. Including all lending related Federal and State regulations
Maintain up to date knowledge of secondary market investor requirements
Develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with customers and colleagues alike. Maintain a positive attitude within the Department by practicing team concepts to achieve common objectives and service standards
Provide training and support to all lending related functions of the bank on loan products, procedures, and system navigation
Participate with Learning and Development on credit and product development/training sessions as needed
Works under limited supervision or independently
Adhere to telephone and communication standards when interacting with customers to attract business
Perform additional duties as requested
Conditions loans for Bank Portfolio, Agency, Investor acceptance, and acceptance of automated underwriting systems (AUS) decisions
Manage very tight deadlines & quality of loans underwritten with an understanding of industry standards and documentation requirements for loans sold to investors
Execute delivery of originated loans to investors. Utilize Loan Origination System to transmit loan delivery data to investors to minimize key-stroke error and processing time
When further documentation is required to deliver a loan, work the manager and the investor to facilitate the delivery of required documents to the investor, with the goal of minimizing repurchase or post-purchase adjustment risk
Assist the manager in completing various lending reports
Qualification
Required
Minimum 4-5 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, including secondary market knowledge
Knowledge of Mortgage Industry, mortgage loan file documents, general knowledge of closing, insurance and mortgage insurance requirements
Knowledge of and experience with property and credit underwriting requirements of FNMA, VA, as well as other secondary market loan programs
Expertise in and familiarity with different AUS systems (i.e., Desktop Underwriter (“DU”))
Minimum Education Associate's Degree in finance or business related field, or equivalent in work experience
Must possess the ability to read, write and speak fluently in the English language
Excellent communication (written and verbal), organization and customer service skills with both internal and external customers
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work well under pressure
Ability to handle conflict resolutions in a professional manner
Ability to handle highly confidential information
Strong organizational, problem solving, multi-tasking and analytical skills
Acute attention to detail
Required Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and responsibilities relating to them
Preferred
Bachelor's Degree in finance or business related field
