PT Metrologist Laboratory Technician

NEOGOV is seeking a PT Metrologist Laboratory Technician at Cape Fear Community College. The technician will focus on the operations of the Chemical Technology and Biotechnology lab, including the calibration and maintenance of various analytical instruments.

Responsibilities

Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Chemical Technology and Biotechnology laboratory spaces at all campus locations
Maintains all documentation pertaining to instrument qualification and metrology
Drafts, organizes, maintains, and executes procedures, protocols, and/or SOPs for various instrumentation
Prepares for, sets up, and cleans up after student laboratory experiments and activities
Prepares solutions, dilutions, and standardized solutions needed to operate, maintain, and test instrumentation
Organizes and maintains laboratory consumables and supplies
Maintains the operation of general laboratory equipment (water systems, microscopes, centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.) and analytical instrumentation (HPLC, GC, density meters, etc.)
Maintains a clean, sanitary, and organized work area in all instrumentation spaces
Submits maintenance requests for room repairs and/or replacement and relocation of equipment
Insures the proper and safe storage and identification of equipment and chemicals
Performs equipment preventive maintenance and scheduling of repairs and service
Collaborates with IT on computer and software needs
Attends open house events and/or classroom visitations (off-campus and on-campus), as needed, to assist in recruitment for the Chemical Technology and Biotechnology programs
Assists in on-campus engagement events with visiting groups (summer camps, outreach programs, career academies, high school field trips, etc.) as needed
Routinely inspects lab equipment to include ignition sources and gas shut-off devices
Notifies the Instructors and Program Director of absences
Communicates regularly and effectively with the Program Director of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology as well as Chemical Technology and Biotechnology faculty and staff
Works with instructors to test and improve laboratory experiments
Keeps updated equipment inventory list
Communicates effectively with maintenance or custodial staff
Organizes equipment maintenance visits (if internal troubleshooting fails) with 3rd party vendors
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required
Wears and maintains proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Lifts and moves supplies and light equipment

Required

Associate's degree from a regionally accredited college or university which includes Chemistry, Chemical Technology, or Biotechnology courses
At least 2 years' experience working with analytical instrumentation in a science laboratory setting (either within industry, an academic setting, or a combination of both)
Knowledge of the sciences (Biology, Chemistry) or Chemical Technology
Scientific laboratory procedures and techniques, including quality control and assurance
Spectroscopy and chromatography instrumentation
Proper and safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals, substances, and wastes
Computer systems, software, and hardware common to instructional laboratories including Excel and Word
Recordkeeping procedures
Follow instructions for lab set up, clean up, solution and materials preparation, equipment usage, etc
Work independently and collaboratively with a high degree of self-motivation; able to train and mentor others
Learn new hardware and software systems
Manage time effectively to prepare for several labs each week
Work in teams with administrators, faculty, staff, students, vendors and service individuals
Be organized with meticulous attention to detail
Effectively and safely operate, adapt, and maintain scientific equipment
Tackle problems with enthusiasm and curiosity
Build upon troubleshooting skills beginning with laboratory instrumentation
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, communicating with others, operating assigned equipment, and handling varied tasks simultaneously
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include standing or sitting for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment, handling varied tasks simultaneously, and bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of making sound decisions, responding to questions, and demonstrating intellectual capabilities

Preferred

Bachelor of Science in Biology or Chemistry preferred
Lab experience in an academic setting, OSHA training, and CPR certified preferred
Ability to work flexible hours as some evening and weekend hours may be needed
Knowledge of Agilent, Shimadzu, and Metrohm instrumentation and related software
