Transmission Engineer - Scoping (Kansas City)
Burns & McDonnell is seeking a driven and analytical Transmission Engineer (Scoping) to specialize in the critical front-end scoping phase of their transmission line projects. This role combines technical engineering expertise with strategic project planning to ensure projects are well-defined and set up for success. Responsibilities include developing preliminary designs, confirming client needs, and preparing documentation for handoff to the design team.

Responsibilities
Review details provided by project sponsor and research existing information and details to determine if any items need to be clarified with other stakeholders
Develop high level scope of work based on sponsor requests and results of research performed and information received from stakeholders
Utilize PLS-CADD to review existing models and occasionally perform preliminary design work or coordinate with other engineers and designers to have work performed
Document assumptions and points of clarification related to project scope, schedule and budget
Attend regular client meetings to present and update on the status of project scope and budget development
Manage stakeholder request and questions
Develop high level project schedules following client templates
Input project information into clients estimating software (Sage experience preferred)
Assists in the transmission line design of projects from the conceptual phase
Assists in designing transmission line components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers or to assist in the development of the scope
Applies basic knowledge of commonly used civil and structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the civil/structural engineering services industry
Review existing engineering documentation
Develop solutions that adhere to client specifications and design standards
Develop take-off quantities of major material based on the developed scope
Develop deliverables for stakeholder review and approval
Adhere to company and client quality control processes in developing deliverables
Identify additional support estimates required to be completed by others and coordinate accordingly
Qualification
Required
Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field and a minimum of 3 years of transmission line design, construction or estimating experience. Applicable experience may be substituted for the degree requirement
Ability to work independently or in groups, think creatively and analytically, and make quick and sound decisions
Basic knowledge in standard civil/structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills
Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills
Demonstrated leadership skills
Demonstrate ability to self-perform and to review the work of others
Preferred
Basic knowledge of transmission, substation, or distribution design experience
Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, Sage, Google Earth, PLS-CADD), and civil/structural analysis programs
Engineers in Training-EIT Certification
