Law Clerk - Summer 2026

Disability Rights California (DRC) is a nonprofit, public-interest law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities. The Law Clerk position offers law students a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work within various practice groups, providing legal advocacy and support to clients across California.

Responsibilities

Interviewing clients and consumers
Providing counsel and advice on self-advocacy
Legal research and writing
Legislative analysis and writing
Representation at mediation and administrative hearings at school districts, universities, regional centers, Social Security offices, and others
Assisting people with psychiatric disabilities in locked facilities to ensure the enforcement of their federal, state, constitutional, and statutory rights
Assisting clients file charges of discrimination with the U.S. Office for Civil Rights under the Department of Education, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Assisting in the investigation of systemic and potentially life-threatening abuse and neglect in state and private facilities, serving people with psychiatric and developmental disabilities
Conduct training on the law and multicultural outreach

Required

Must be a current law student
Must live in California for the duration of the paid clerkship
Ability to work remotely or hybrid as assigned to the geographically closest DRC office
Commitment to a 10-week program, typically working 37.5 hours a week
Ability to collaborate with a team to serve clients across the state
Experience or interest in legal research and writing
Experience or interest in interviewing clients and consumers
Experience or interest in providing counsel and advice on self-advocacy
Experience or interest in legislative analysis and writing
Experience or interest in representation at mediation and administrative hearings
Experience or interest in assisting people with psychiatric disabilities
Experience or interest in assisting clients file charges of discrimination
Experience or interest in investigating systemic abuse and neglect
Experience or interest in conducting training on the law and multicultural outreach
Ability to provide direct client services alongside legal advocates and attorneys
Ability to develop substantive legal training and materials
