Distribution Field Engineer

Responsibilities

Reviews requirements or instructions to design and develop new components or redesign existing components
Meets with members, contractors, and other stakeholders on-site to evaluate job requirements, construction conditions, and scheduling needs
Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs
Determines feasibility of designing new plant equipment or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors
Prepares system layout by providing detailed drawings and schematics
Prepares estimates of costs
Determines appropriate construction methods (plowing, boring, trenching) and evaluates contractor/equipment capabilities for safe and efficient installation
Maintains a working knowledge of new developments, techniques, and products in the industry
Continuously identifies areas of improvement for the role and takes responsibility for implementing solutions
Coordinates project information with internal teams and external contractors to ensure accuracy and timely completion
Performs mapping responsibilities, including drafting and maintaining accurate records of line extensions
Maintains a working knowledge of current construction practices, industry standards, and safety requirements
Utilizes tablets, laptops, and engineering software to document staking and to digitize project maps into the system of record

Required

Minimum Experience: Experienced
Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in Electric/Fiber Optic/Mechanical Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively to customers or their representatives
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Proficiency in tablets, laptops, mapping/GIS software, and engineering/staking software
Ability to adapt to new software systems and digital workflows
Valid Michigan Driver's License
Must have the ability to use chain saws, hand saws, compass, transit, hand tools, cable and pin locators, and associated types of measuring devices
Must have ability to calculate and size Single Phase and Three Phase services
Must be able to design distribution facilities according to Rural Utilities Services specifications and the national Electric Safety Code
