Director of GIS
The City of New York is home to the Fire Department, the largest and busiest emergency response agency in the world. They are seeking a Director of Geographic Information Systems Unit to lead the strategic planning and management of GIS needs across the FDNY, ensuring accurate geospatial data supports decision-making and operations.

Responsibilities
Lead the strategic planning, implementation, and management of all spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems/Science (GIS) needs across the FDNY
Oversee GIS staff, data governance, system architecture, application development, spatial analysis, and integration with other enterprise systems
Serve as the primary point of contact for all GIS-related initiatives
Ensure GIS services support decision-making, operations and geo-analytics through accurate and accessible geospatial data
Oversee the creation, maintenance, and quality control of critical FDNY-related spatial datasets
Participate in governance committees with other NYC agencies on management of geospatial data
Act as FDNY representative, liaison to regional, State and Federal agencies
Promote GIS awareness and demonstrate the value of spatial analysis
Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and security of spatial data assets
Stay current with GIS trends and standards in public safety and fire service
Qualification
Required
A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health
A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization
A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in '2' above
Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in '1' and '2' above
Preferred
Master's Degree preferred in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography or Computer Science
Adept in GIS and cartographic best practices and principles current with new developments in the GIS field
Manage and use the Esri ArcGIS enterprise suite including ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server 10+, ArcGIS Online, and Portal for ArcGIS
Experience in Microsoft Office, SQL Server, Oracle, R, Python
Assist Analysts, Developers, and/or Consultants with GIS system design, configuration, implementation, maintenance, and administration for internal stakeholders' requests and needs
Partner with other government agencies, vendors and universities to further spatial analysis and GIS within the Unit
Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
Effective time management and organizational skills, review direct reports and approve performance appraisals
Ability to learn new technologies and are adaptable to change, explore new ways to use, analyze and display data
Familiarity with Fire and EMS operations, terminology, and NFPA standards
