Head of Automation and Carpentry - Blue Man Group Orlando

Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group is looking for a full-time Head of Automation & Carpentry for Blue Man Group Orlando. The role involves managing the Automation & Carpentry Departments, overseeing crew operations, ensuring safety and technical standards, and participating in hiring and training processes.

Responsibilities

Ensure that Blue Man Group values and artistic vision are understood and supported across the organization
Manage the Automation & Carpentry Departments for BMG Orlando
Create the departments’ show schedule; ensure coverage and maintenance for all shows by coordinating show and work schedules
Manage the training of all members of the Automation & Carpentry Departments and provide ongoing training for members of the department to ensure consistency and sustained employee engagement with the show and the organization
Maintain knowledge and training to operate, repair, and/or identify problems with all automation and rigging elements, including but not limited to electrical systems, pneumatics systems, electrical circuitry and Stage Technologies Automation Control Systems
Clearly communicate notes and/or changes to the show to all members of the Automation & Carpentry Departments, local and Blue Man Productions (BMP) Artistic Direction, other technical departments, Production Manager and Stage Management Department as required
Supervise the ordering and organization of all shop supplies/inventories
Keep track of vendors and contact numbers and forge positive, collaborative relationships with suppliers
Collaborate with the Production Manager to create and maintain the department budget in accordance with procedures outlined by General Management
Oversee department payroll
Organize and lead Automation & Carpentry Department meetings
Oversee Automation & Carpentry show running tracks, ensuring crew run sheets (including preset, show cues, turnover, and post-show) are updated regularly in collaboration with Stage Management
Ensure that show operations are performed in a safe, professional, timely and efficient manner
Maintain current knowledge of show tracks and be able to run departmental tracks in an emergency
Maintain and oversee all technical elements of the show under the Automation & Carpentry Departments jurisdiction
Execute or ensure general repair, construction, maintenance, and/or restock of all automation/rigging and carpentry/scenic supplies as needed
Troubleshoot technical issues as they arise
Adhere to safety rules and regulations for locality
Ensure Automation/Rigging & Carpentry Crew coverage and execute duties for all local Blue Man events as requested. These events include, but are not limited to, rehearsals, press events, shows, appearances and corporate events
Design, organize, supervise and set up of automation/rigging elements, and crew as needed
Participate in load-in and load-out and lend assistance to Production Management, Stage Management or other positions as needed
Participate in gigs as requested by local management
All other work-related duties as assigned

Required

The ability to work effectively in a team environment
Extensive knowledge behind the mechanics of theatrical automated and rigging systems
Understanding the type of equipment utilized in automated show control including control consoles, motor control and safety systems
Basic knowledge of power transmission components, pneumatics, and electricity
Experience working in a harness with tools and equipment while hanging or standing near exposed drop offs
Basic knowledge of commonly used rigging equipment, tools, hardware and safe rigging practices
Working with rope and knot tying
Having a general knowledge of metal shop work, performing tasks such as cutting, grinding, drilling, welding and demonstrating the safe utilization of various shop machine and hand tools
Having a general knowledge of wood shop work, performing tasks such as cutting, sanding, routing and demonstrating the safe utilization of various shop machines and hand tools
Experience with the operation of various lifts including fork trucks, articulating booms, scissor and single man lifts
Project Management
The ability to work effectively in low-light environments
Adhere to and promote all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations as they pertain to the safe operation of all elements related to the show; participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training
Contribute to a safe and positive working environment at all times by adhering to and following all Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group standards, values, policies and regulations pertaining to safety using equipment and established working methods
Assist other departments when necessary for cross-departmental support
At least 5 years of previous experience or in a similar environment
Working knowledge of Microsoft applications
Previous leadership experience
Bachelor's degree in Technical Production or a similar field; or equivalent relevant work experience
Ability to obtain OSHA 30 course completion card
Fluent in English, both written and spoken; Ability to clearly and effectively communicate via headset
Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to: climbing, crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting, sometimes for extended amounts of time; lifting at least 50lbs, working with limited to no visibility
Verification of the right to work in the United States for Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, as demonstrated by completion of the Form I-9 upon hire and the submission of acceptable documentation (as noted on the Form I-9) verifying one's identity and work authorization
