Maintenance I (Utility Systems Technician Trainee)
City of Independence, Missouri is seeking a Maintenance I (Utility Systems Technician Trainee) to assist in the installation, operation, and maintenance of utility metering and data systems. This training-level position involves performing field work related to smart meter equipment and supporting the Utility Billing Office.

Responsibilities
Assists with the installation, testing, and maintenance of automated meter reading (AMR/AMI) equipment and related communication hardware and components
Performs basic meter reads, inspections, and troubleshooting under direction of a senior technician
Learns to identify and report equipment malfunctions, leaks, or connectivity issues within the smart meter system
Supports Utility Billing staff by assisting in data collection and verifying meter read accuracy
Provides courteous assistance to customers regarding meter access and service appointments
Maintains accurate work logs and documentation of field activities
Qualification
Required
Willingness and ability to learn smart meter technology, communication systems, and basic diagnostic tools
Ability to operate handheld meter-reading devices and follow software-assisted instructions
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and communicate effectively with the public
Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
High school diploma or GED required
Moderate to occasional heavy physical effort required. Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred
Prior experience in general maintenance, utilities, information technology, or construction work preferred but not required
