Mountain Area Field Biologist Intern
The N.C. Department of Information Technology is overseeing various state government operations, and they are seeking an intern to assist Field Biologists. Responsibilities
Conduct field surveys for rare plant and/or animal species within the mountains of western NC
Assist Field Biologists in locating and documenting rare plant/animal populations, collecting data, and compiling species lists
Create reference documents, make GIS maps, identify natural communities, enter data, and write reports describing findings
Qualification
Required
An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state
Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale
Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026
Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program
To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed
Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply
Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship
Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment
Experience using dichotomous botanical keys and field guides, familiarity with the major plant families, and knowledge of Mountain region flora
Knowledge of the identification and ecology of native wildlife of the Mountain region
Experience with field navigation using a GPS unit or tablet, field navigation apps, and a topographic map
Ability to hike off trail in steep and rugged terrain and through dense vegetation in all types of weather conditions
Willingness to work long days (10+ hours) in the field, with much of the day spent hiking off trails
Attention to detail and positive attitude; ability to work independently on office tasks; passion for conservation and biodiversity
