Education/Youth Programs Intern

The N.C. Department of Information Technology is seeking an Education/Youth Programs Intern to assist with summer programs focused on natural science and climate resilience. The intern will play a key role in planning, organizing, and co-leading activities for high school and middle school students, while gaining valuable experience in educational programming.

Responsibilities

Participate as a co-leader for both summer programs, including activity development, planning, and implementation of the camps
Help prepare participant information materials, activity planning, and scheduling of activities
Maintain an active list of participants and the status of their applications
Assemble instructor notebooks, collection of waivers and forms, organize camp supplies, and develop activities for camps
The intern will co-lead activities in keeping with their own interests, knowledge, and comfort level, while being actively encouraged to push their own boundaries

Required

An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state
Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale
Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026
Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program
To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed
Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply
Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship
Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment
Previous experience working with young people in an educational setting or camp environment (paid work or volunteering)
Strong organizational and leadership skills, and a desire to further build these skills
Comfort with the natural world and working outdoors in hot, humid conditions
Positive attitude and passion and enthusiasm for outdoor education
Strong work ethic, including self-motivation, ability to follow directions, responsibility, promptness and professionalism

Preferred

Academic Majors desired: Education, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Natural Sciences, Environmental Education, Museum Studies, Natural Resources, or other related majors
