Senior Power Generation Mechanical Engineer
Florida Municipal Power Agency is seeking a Senior Power Generation Mechanical Engineer to provide highly technical mechanical and industrial engineering design and project management work. Responsibilities
Manage completion of assigned programs and work processes
Leads and performs work associated with projects as assigned onsite and remotely at FMPA sites throughout Florida
Works regularly with plant staff and plant management on efficiency, reliability, and improvement projects
Monitors plant project plans for progress, scope and budget. Works with plant management to understand variances or reasons projects can become behind schedule and adjusts as necessary
With strong knowledge and experience the position will model, design and engineer solutions related to mechanical, thermodynamic, fluid, piping and structural engineering
Makes field investigations of existing facilities
Assists in estimation and budgeting of plant projects within budgetary Class 4 estimates with up to 15% design requirements known
Develops detailed scope requirements to support FMPA procurement or outsourcing needs related to assigned projects. Ensures procurement timelines are sufficient to address required lead times in accordance with plant outage schedules
Perform root cause determinations of generating unit and auxiliary equipment failures. Prepares specifications for maintenance outages, equipment repairs and upgrade projects for all FMPA generation facilities
Work together with plant management and staff to plan and engineer modifications to existing plant configuration and equipment or system upgrades. Completes economic justifications for potential projects. Prepare scope descriptions and specifications as required
Ensure that plant drawings are properly organized and updated as required. Works with plant management to ensure adherence to change management processes
Performs diagnostic work and coordinates with equipment manufacturers and vendors in support of returning generation units to service
Extract, comprehend and develop instructions from technical manuals, journals, and drawings, technical literature and other job-related material; and to effectively communicate orally and in writing using the English language
Possess independent decision-making capabilities in stressful situations with minimum supervision
Continual review and improvement to all work processes and procedures
Extended travel to plant sites will be required as necessary
Qualification
Required
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
Minimum working experience of ten plus years in the Power Generation industry which should include direct experience with contractors, power plant or heavy industrial maintenance and operations experience
Extensive experience in steam generation, gas turbines, steam turbines and their auxiliaries coupled with exposure to operations and maintenance practices and procedures
Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.), experience with analysis tools (FEA, CFD), and strong knowledge of engineering principles (thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, stress analysis, etc.)
Experience with maintenance management systems and advanced project tracking software, outage planning and support
Extensive experience with RCA and MOC process and procedures
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical engineering
Knowledge of the principles and methods involved in the design, construction and operation of natural gas fired electric power generation facilities, and turbo machinery
Knowledge in the use of computers and mechanical engineering modeling software
Ability to coordinate the activities of contract personnel, write project scopes and contract language
Must be able to use personal protection equipment properly and safely as directed or assigned
On occasion will be exposed to adverse weather and operating conditions
Occasionally may need to climb ladders and stairways
Must be comfortable being exposed to confined spaces and elevated areas
Expected to assist power plant personnel in emergency situations and/or hurricane response or recovery
Must be able to maintain good program records and filing systems
Must have good analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all FMPA Power Plant personnel, the public and associated business affiliates
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force
Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel
Frequently requires walking and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling
Work has standard vision requirements
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
Work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration
Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)
The ability to discern the colors red, green, amber and blue as used in troubleshooting electrical diagrams, control system process and in color coding used in electronic and electrical component repairs
The ability to lift weights or twist with a force of up to 75 pounds, as in the removal and replacement of access doors to equipment, turning of valves, hoisting of material overhead
Working in Confined spaces and at heights, as in entering internal areas of the turbine for inspection or repairs during outages, climbing ladders to gain access, working within tight quarters of surrounding piping and conduit to perform troubleshooting functions

A Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly valued
