Invasive Species Program Intern

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government, overseeing various operations and advocacy programs. The Invasive Species Program Intern will assist with GIS data management, develop phenological calendars for invasive species, and support fieldwork efforts.

Responsibilities

Assist the NC State Parks Invasive Species Program with GIS data management, create phenological calendars for invasive plants, and assist with field work
Develop phenological calendars for the top 20 invasive species in NC
Assist with GIS data audits and develop species specific symbology for Field Maps
Help with invasive species control efforts using a variety of methods including herbicide application and mechanical methods on invasive plants
Edit and develop Invasive Species program guidelines

Required

An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state
Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale
Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026
Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program
To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed
Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply
Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship
Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment
Background in ESRI software including Arc Pro, Arc GIS Online, and Field Maps
Understanding of principles of data management
Basic knowledge of plants of NC, and willingness to learn control methods of invasive plant species
Prepared to assist with field work in Summer weather conditions
Strong writing skills and experience with Microsoft Word

Preferred

Opportunities for prescribed burning if individual has appropriate qualifications
