Responsibilities
Architecture and standards
Own and drive reference architectures for HV/MV/LV distribution, AIS/GIS substations, protective relaying, grounding, and microgrid/EMS controls
Define interconnection strategies with utilities (transmission and distribution), including islanding
Establish standards for generators (turbines/reciprocating engines), switchgear, UPS topologies, and BESS integration
Ensure designs meet or exceed reliability goals (e.g., N+1/2N) and fault tolerance requirements
Grid interconnection and utilities
Oversee load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, harmonics, and stability studies; validate relay coordination and protection settings
Develop strategies for demand response, curtailable load, and peak-shaving while safeguarding SLAs
Onsite generation and BESS
Architect and deliver onsite generation plants (gas turbines, reciprocating engines) including fuel systems, emissions controls, and heat recovery where applicable
Specify and deploy BESS for resiliency and economics (ride-through, fast frequency response, peak shaving, spinning reserve, black start support)
Define control sequences for generator–BESS–UPS coordination, microgrid control, and transitions between grid-connected and island modes
Design, delivery, and operations
Provide technical leadership from concept to commissioning (L1–L5), including integrated systems testing
Review/approve one-line diagrams, protection schemes, SCADA/EMS architectures, and equipment specifications (transformers, switchgear, breakers)
Efficiency and cost optimization
Drive total cost of ownership (capex/opex) reductions via optimized topologies, demand charge reduction
Set and deliver targets for electrical efficiency, losses, and system availability; implement data-driven performance monitoring
Vendor and industry engagement
Lead RFIs/RFPs and technical evaluations for OEMs (switchgear, transformers, generators, BESS, relays) and EPCs
Track standards and emerging tech and build adoption roadmaps
Qualification
Required
