USDA-ARS Cacao Breeding and Genomics Fellowship

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is offering a research opportunity with the USDA focusing on Cacao Breeding and Genomics. The selected fellow will engage in breeding, genomics, and bioinformatics efforts to develop high-yielding cacao cultivars and gain hands-on experience in advanced laboratory techniques and data analysis.

Responsibilities

Developing high-yielding cacao and other crop cultivars characterized by superior quality attributes and resistance to diseases and pests
Engaging in all aspects of breeding, genomics, and bioinformatics efforts for cacao improvement
Collaborating with other scientists from universities and research institutions focused on cacao genomics and molecular-assisted breeding methodologies
Learning how to develop breeding populations for cacao and other fruit tree species
Screening cacao germplasm accessions and breeding populations for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses using advanced genomic tools
Training in cutting-edge laboratory techniques, including Sanger sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing
Analyzing sequencing data using statistical methods and bioinformatics tools
Interpreting research findings, preparing scientific manuscripts for publication, and presenting results at professional scientific conferences

Required

Currently pursuing or have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g., Breeding, Biology, Plant Genetics, Genomics, Plant Pathology or related fields)
U.S. Citizen Only

Preferred

Biology, genetics, and genomics disciplines are preferred
Experience in breeding, genetics, genomics and field operational research
Experience in performing DNA extractions, RNA extractions, polymerase chain reaction, and gel electrophoresis
Experience in performing Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing and analyzing resulting data using bioinformatic tools
Experience in data organization, genomic analysis and preparation for manuscript publishing
