Responsibilities
Perform a variety of duties in the operation, maintenance, and repair of landfill gas collection, leachate collection, flare station, wheel wash, and groundwater treatment plant
Monitor, collect and submit samples of landfill gas, groundwater, stormwater, landfill leachate, and related systems to ensure County landfills and other refuse related facilities are operating in compliance with facility permits
Qualification
Required
Two years of full-time paid experience in maintenance, construction and/or repair of mechanical and electrical components utilized at landfills, refuse related facilities, or other mechanical facilities with similar systems and equipment
Completion of 60 semester units or more (or 90 quarter units or more) at an accredited trade school, junior college, or university with a minimum of 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) in Mechanical-Electrical Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other field closely related to the intent of the class
A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, shall be required at the time of appointment
Basic principles of operation of pumps, motors, and valves related to landfill and refuse facility equipment
Fundamentals of gas compressors, electronically, pneumatically, and hydraulically controlled valves, chemical handling systems, and associated equipment
Lubrication requirements of pumps and motors
Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, construction, repair, and operation of mechanical equipment, such as pumps, motors, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Basic pipefitting techniques and practices
Principles, practices, and safety precautions for confined space entry
Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to area of assignment
Basic arithmetic (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, ratios, and fractions)
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
Establish and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with customers, co-workers, other agencies and the general public
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
Maintain courteous and effective relationships with fellow employees and the public
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions
Learn to perform a variety of skilled, manual labor tasks relating to repair, preventive maintenance, and operational checks of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic systems and equipment used in landfill, groundwater remediation facilities, and other related systems
Learn principles and practices of landfill and refuse facility operations as it relates to working in active landfill construction environment
Learn procedures and corrective actions to respond to emergency and special operating conditions for active methane gas field, forced main air and discharge pipe line; condensate and leachate pipeline, sumps, pumps and controls
Use computer equipment and related peripheral equipment to enter and extract information
Use precision, hand, and power tools and equipment
Read and interpret basic maps, diagrams, instruction manuals, procedures, plans, and blueprints; and maintain records
Troubleshoot and repair mechanical equipment
Use, calibrate, and maintain special purpose scientific measuring devices
Perform skilled and semiskilled, hard physical labor
Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
Effectively organize and prioritize work assignments
Keep accurate and orderly records
Make arithmetical computations accurately and rapidly
Learn to interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
