The Marion VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse for Same Day Surgery within Nursing Service located in Marion, IL. The RN will provide pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with healthcare teams while maintaining high standards of patient care.

Responsibilities
The Same Day Surgery Registered Nurse (RN) provides pre-operative/procedural care, including (but not limited to) the nursing assessment of patients, consent, and H&P validations, the starting of intravenous fluids including venipuncture, assuring all lab work and other pre-operative/procedural testing is completed and communicated to team members, confirms surgical sites are prepared and marked, and the administration of medications as ordered
He/she provides clear and concise preoperative teaching and reviews discharge instructions to patients and families with written and verbal communication
The Same Day Surgery RN monitors the postoperative patient's level of consciousness after the recovery of anesthesia/sedation
He/she closely observes signs of side effects of post-residual anesthesia medications
The Same Day Surgery RN maintains knowledge of current American Society of Peri-anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards, VHA Directive, and service-level standard operating procedures
The incumbent will work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver optimal patient care
The incumbent will communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding patient care plans and progress
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring comprehensive documentation of all phases of care that is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record
The incumbent will also be responsible for participating in cross-training in different roles within the department
This flexibility and adaptability will enable them to enhance their skill set while also supporting department operations, as needed
Qualification
Required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing
Education must be from a school of professional nursing accredited by one of the following accrediting organizations: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia
English Language Proficiency
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Must pass pre-employment physical examination
U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
Subject to background/security investigation
Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP)
Preferred
Experience in perioperative setting or surgery center/outpatient surgery environment within the last three (3) years
Minimum of three (3) years RN experience
BSN preferred
