Responsibilities

In collaboration with the Unit Nurse Manager, develops, modifies. and/or interprets performance standards
Explains performance expectations to employees and provides regular feedback on strengths and weaknesses
Develops realistic performance standards through collaboration with the Unit Nurse Manager and/or Assistant Manager and provides appropriate appraisal of health technician staff
Appraises subordinate workers performance ensuring consistency and equity in rating techniques
As part of their duties, the Supervisory Health Technician / Office Manager will assist the Unit Nurse Manager as well as Ambulatory Care Service administrative staff in gathering data necessary for managing individual specialty care clinics
Plans, coordinates, adjusts workload and makes assignments of clinic personnel to conform to changing policies and procedures in order to provide maximum levels of customer service to both the Veteran patients and the professional staff
Works closely with other Ambulatory Care Service supervisors, Unit Managers, and Chief to ensure appropriate non-provider staffing across clinic areas
Staffing responsibilities will include ensuring adequate staffing on a 24-hour 7 day a week basis for clinics with this scheduling requirement
Recommends awards when appropriate and approves within-grade increases
Identifies employee developmental needs and provides or arranges for training (formal and on-the-job) to maintain and improve job performance
Encourages self-development
Demonstrates sensitivity to ideas of subordinates
Promotes an environment in which employees are empowered to participate in and contribute to effective mission accomplishment
Advises and provides counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures. and directives of management
Discharges security responsibilities by ensuring education and compliance with security directives for employees with access to classified or sensitive material
Recognizes and takes action to correct situations posing a threat to the health or safety of subordinates
Applies EEO principles and requirements to all personnel management actions and decisions, and ensures all personnel are treated in a manner free of discrimination

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS8 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree (transcripts are required)
A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education
Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs
Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in the Specialty Care clinics, inpatient unit, or an office setting
Physical Dispersion: A substantial portion of the workload for which the supervisor is responsible is regularly carried out at one or more locations which are physically removed from the main unit
