Responsibilities
Performs installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high-voltage lines; operates line trucks and bucket trucks, loads wire, transformers, poles, etc
Assists with a variety of emergency problems; may be required to work extended hours in emergency situations
Replaces broken and burned-out street light bulbs; ability to climb poles
Reads and resets various meters
Cuts on and cuts off electric service at the pole; follows up broken meter seal reports; makes service connections to residences and business establishments
Trim trees as necessary for the performance of other duties
Performs installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high voltage lines; operates a line truck; loads wire, transformers, climbs poles, etc.; installs transformers and wires up secondaries; installs, repairs, and replaces cross arms, leg supports, cables, insulators, and lightning arrestors; performs required line work on energized and de-energized circuits; installs, maintains, and removes meters; installs and repairs street and yard lights; and replaces defective poles
Makes new service connections to residences and business establishments by installing transformers and secondary wires from pole to point of service
Checks voltage and phase rotation; installs voltage and current transformers; and is responsible for maintaining various pieces of equipment used in power line work
Trims trees as necessary; responds to after-hour problems, acts as a service troubleshooter; acts as an electric service troubleshooter
Operates all underground mechanical digging machines, locators, and test equipment; maintains and installs underground services; assists with a variety of emergency problems; and responds to after-hours problems
Participates in the after-hours on-call roster as required, electric system priorities may require extended periods of overtime, including weekends, and holidays; participates in pre- and post-job "tail-gate" meetings, and attends monthly safety meetings as required
Cuts on and cuts off electric service at pole
Climbs poles, operates bucket and line trucks, and various pieces of equipment as required; frames poles, installs hardware, fuses, transformers, and pulls wires; ties in conductors and changes insulators; performs electrical "hotline" work as required; is familiar with the proper uses of various hot line tools and equipment
Installs and removes cross arms, cutouts, lighting arresters, primary and secondary lines, span guys, breaker bars, etc; carry out the requisite groundwork in preparation for and after a job; maintains and repairs street and rental lights as required; maintains necessary paperwork and transformer card data as needed
Responds to after-hour problems acts as an electric service troubleshooter, participates in the after-hours on-call roster as required, electric system priorities may require extended periods of overtime, including weekends, holidays; and maintains responsibility for verifying the condition of all vehicles, equipment, and tools provided for use in the performance of city work
Ability to take clearances and occasionally perform switching at unattended substations and line sectionalizing disconnect switches; performs switching and sectionalizing of circuits as required
Installs single phase and multi-phase underground and overhead services; maintains and assists in repairs of various substation equipment as required
Cuts on and cuts off services at the pole; checks voltage and rotation; installs voltage and current transformers; wires transformer rated meters; diagnoses problems in the field
Responds with sound judgment to unusual and hazardous circumstances and determines action and restores service; maintains and installs underground services; operates all underground equipment
Participates in pre- and post-job "tail-gate" meetings, attends monthly safety meetings as required
Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school is supplemented by minimal experience in the construction and maintenance of power distribution lines, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 lbs; bend and stoop; work in an outside construction environment during all seasons; ability to use manual construction equipment, such as a shovel
Complete NIMS IS 100, 200, and 700 training within twelve months
Obtain Class B Commercial driver's license within six months of hire
Graduation from high school and moderate experience in the construction and maintenance of power distribution lines, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Valid commercial driver's license
Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the construction and maintenance of power distribution lines, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Graduation from high school. Possession of a Journeyman Lineman Card by successfully completing an accredited Lineman Apprenticeship Program recognized by the State of North Carolina and the United States Department of Labor
Must also have completed 12,000 verifiable electric-utility-industry hours in the construction and maintenance of power distribution lines and equipment
Complete NIMS IS 100, 200, and 700 training within eighteen months
Valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina
Possession of NC Journeyman Lineman Certification upon hire
Must possess a valid appropriate driver's license with acceptable driving history
Drug screening, criminal background, and reference checks are required
