YouTube Producer, Temporary
ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. They are seeking a YouTube producer to adapt long-form, written investigative journalism into mid-length video for the platform, focusing on building a comprehensive YouTube strategy and producing compelling video storytelling.

Responsibilities
Create video content that is grounded in ethical journalistic principles, standards and practices, and use editorial judgment to translate stories with the sensitivity, care and appropriate tone required of our investigations
Own the creative and technical production for videos from beginning to end, including script writing, working with reporters and editors to gather visual assets, filming, editing and designing any as-needed still and motion graphics, and packaging for publication (video titles, thumbnail creation and more)
Collaborate with reporters, senior editors, visual editors, audience team members and other staffers to identify and produce compelling video storytelling
Serve as the on-screen narrator/host for videos, maintaining a consistent voice and approach for explainer-type and host-led video content that is appropriate for ProPublica’s brand
Shoot and edit video in studio, remotely and in the field, ensuring high production values
Manage multiple projects in various stages of production, sometimes meeting tight deadlines
Monitor the editorial calendar and pitch ideas for YouTube video content and packages
Help to define and maintain our YouTube workflow processes and systems to ensure a consistent weekly production of video content
Track monthly video analytics reports that can help inform future optimization, strategy and more
Keep up with trends and changes on YouTube and in the video-viewing habits of audiences consuming news content
Ability to travel for assignments, training and meetings as required
Qualification
Required
Three-plus years' experience producing social video, with at least one year producing video for YouTube for a newsroom, media organization or production studio. Your portfolio should demonstrate videos you have produced for YouTube specifically
Deep proficiency with beginning-to-end video content production, including script writing, filming, editing, motion graphics and animation, and packaging for publication
Fluency telling stories for social platforms with text on screen, voice-overs, direct to camera or other methods, and ability to translate complex reporting into compelling video scripts with an eye for pace, hooks and viewer retention
Strong understanding of YouTube algorithmic trends and optimization strategies, including expertise in crafting effective video titles, thumbnails and descriptions — all with a goal of driving channel growth and maximizing reach and engagement for our videos across the platform
Experience conducting on-camera interviews and directing video subjects in person and remotely
Expertise using video analytics, including a proficiency in YouTube Studio, to guide and shape content strategy for the platform
High proficiency in media production software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro and After Effects, Avid and Figma
Ability to communicate video storytelling pitches through memos, scripts or storyboards to advocate for projects with YouTube potential across the newsroom
Experience with project management software such as Trello, Airtable or Notion
A collaborative mindset, stellar communication skills and the ability to work on several projects at once. You'll need to stay organized and focused to meet concurrent deadlines

Experience being part of founding a YouTube team or launching a new project initiative
Experience in on-site production, including shooting on professional camera equipment and knowledge of lighting and audio setups
Experience using a digital asset management system such as Woodwing
Knowledge of media rights and clearances and a working knowledge of copyright permissions
