Senior Machine Learning Manager, Apple Services Engineering AI/ML
Apple is looking for an experienced Manager in their Services Engineering AI/ML organization to build next-generation media discovery experiences leveraging Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The role involves leading a team of Applied Researchers to drive the integration of cutting-edge advancements in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing to enhance user experiences across Apple's media offerings.

Responsibilities
Lead and mentor ML researchers and engineers
Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration
Set team goals, manage project timelines, and ensure high-quality deliverables
Stay ahead of advancements in LLMs, transformer architectures, and multimodal models
Evaluate and adopt cutting-edge models, toolkits, and frameworks
Oversee end-to-end development of NLP and GenAI models: from data collection and preprocessing to training, evaluation, and deployment
Guide implementation of applications such as summarization, question answering, chatbots, information retrieval, semantic search, and text generation
Ensure responsible AI practices including model fairness, bias mitigation, and explainability
Work closely with product managers, engineers, data science teams, and business stakeholders to align technical solutions with user needs
Translate research breakthroughs into real-world applications that drive user and business value
Encourage publishing, patenting, and collaboration with other AI/ML teams
Drive experimentation with foundation models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and agentic workflows
Qualification
Required
Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computational Linguistics, or related field
7+ years of experience in AI/ML, with 3+ years in leadership roles
Track record of leading engineering teams from exploration & design to implementation, ensuring scalability and reliability
Strong programming skills in Python and experience with ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, LangChain, or similar
Deep understanding of modern ML architectures, pipelines, and evaluation techniques at scale
Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills
Preferred
10+ years in AI/ML, including 5+ years in leadership roles
Experience in building or fine-tuning large-scale foundation models
Familiarity with agentic workflows, RAG, vector databases (e.g., FAISS, Pinecone), and knowledge graphs
Passion for building core capabilities and driving collaboration and reuse
Contributions to open-source ML/NLP projects or relevant research publications in well known conferences
Proven ability to recruit and mentor high-performing, collaborative teams
Skilled in making strategic trade-offs to enable long-term progress
Deep technical expertise and experience applying AI/ML at scale
Able to connect technical decisions to real-world user impact
