Lead Power Plant Engineer
Brown University Health is a healthcare organization that is seeking a Lead Power Plant Engineer to assist in supervising and coordinating daily power plant activities. The role involves monitoring and repairing power plant equipment, as well as assuming supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Chief Engineer.

Responsibilities
Regularly schedules and assigns work to others
Provides technical assistance as required and conducts a follow-up inspection on all work assignments
Participates in the interviewing and selection process
Assesses performance, and recommends salary adjustments, where appropriate
Counsels employees and recommends corrective action, up to and including termination
Participates in the development of Facilities Management Power Plant policies and procedures
Ensures subordinates understand and comply with department and hospital policies and procedures
Daily inspects and checks the condition of the power plant machinery and equipment
Monitors primary switch-gear and breaker controls and regulates the amount of electricity produced by each hospital generator in conjunction with the electricity received from the utility company
Maintains close surveillance of bearing temperatures of generator shafts, oil and steam pressures and turbo generator temperatures and related valves
Identifies problems and makes necessary adjustments to bring temperature and readings within normal ranges
Checks and lubricates pumps, condensers, and air ejectors; check joints for leaks and make repairs
Anticipates power needs, such as those caused by changes in the weather or power supplied by the utility company and starts or stops generator(s) to bring energy production into balance with hospital needs
Records relevant events and facts concerning power plant operations and maintenance
Takes and records gauge and meter readings, including the amount of electricity produced by each generator and power received from the utility company
Maintains and monitors air conditioning tower water levels and operating conditions, adds chemicals to monitor harmful bacteria and viruses conditions and to prevent equipment corrosion
Maintains machinery history logs and records such as time worked on projects and employee attendance
Performs duties of subordinate personnel and performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Minimum of two years Associates Degree or equivalent in mechanical, electrical or related discipline
Completion of two years training in boiler operations and turbo-generator operations generally acquired from a technical school or military service
Requires Stationary Operating Engineer's License from the City of Providence
Supervisory skills to effectively direct the work of others
Analytical ability to plan, schedule and coordinate work projects and to troubleshoot problems
Knowledge of the thermodynamics of steam, the principals of generators and electricity
Knowledge of relevant code requirements and regulations
Working knowledge of a design application (AutoCAD) system preferred
Minimum of five years Power Plant operation experience
Works in areas exposed to electrical, heating and cooling equipment where there is exposure to noise, heat, asbestos, caustic chemicals, etc. and possibility medical waste
Hazards and injuries are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions
Physical ability to climb ladders, carry tools and move and lift equipment, chemical containers and other materials
Preferred
Working knowledge of a design application (AutoCAD) system preferred
