Responsibilities

Protection of park resources and visitors through patrols, education, and permitting
Provide information regarding regulations and explain the importance of resource preservation and protection
Contact and provide visitors information regarding Leave No Trace principles and specific hazards found throughout the park
Patrols by both motorized and non-motorized watercraft and on foot in both front country and remote areas of the park
Other duties consist of providing backcountry and boater orientations, emergency first aid and CPR, search and rescue, environmental protection, vessel data collection, and resource management data collection

Required

U.S. Citizenship required
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program
You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment
You will be required to obtain and maintain a First Aid and CPR certification no later than two months after appointment
You will be required to operate a small watercraft less than 26 feet in length
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required
You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month
Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required
To be eligible your resume must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration
Ability to orient and speak to visitors to promote resource protection and education
Knowledge of computer software, ability to collect data and report out data in a variety of programs
Skill in performing, coordinating, and directing emergency response, relaying regulations, and providing clear and concise information over marine band, parknet, or similar radio networks
Knowledge of Incident Command Systems and ability in carrying out the range of duties involved in all-hazard incident management teams
Skill in communicating effectively and tactfully with a diverse range of people
Knowledge of the recreational resources of the park and of the surrounding area, including camping, fishing, hiking, boating, kayaking, biking, bird watching, climbing and other types of activities
Knowledge regarding minimizing the environmental impact and the safety requirements for each permitted activity
Ability to operate sea kayaks effectively and safely, follow Leave No Trace principles, and bear safety skills in a remote marine environment

Benefits

An additional 3% cost of living allowance (COLA) will be added to the salary above.
Government housing may be available.
Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.
