MODEL MAKER
USAJOBS is seeking a Model Maker at Travis AFB. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the technical expert for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Additive Manufacturing (AM) machines and equipment, operating, maintaining, and providing training on specialized shop machinery.

Responsibilities
Manufactures complex and non-routine parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials through the use of conventional, computer numerical control (CNC) and additive manufacturing (AM) machine tools, and precision handwork
Sets up and operates a variety of conventional, computer numerical control (CNC) and additive manufacturing machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plain, and universal milling machines; multi-axis CNC milling machines; EDM wire cutting machine; shapers; planers; internal and external grinders; thread cutters; radial drills; metal and polymer additive manufacturing systems and Metrologic scanning equipment to accomplish untried tasks, procedures, and prototypes
Uses a variety of precision measuring instruments and equipment such as Vernier calipers; height gauges; squares; protractors; inside, outside, and depth micrometers; electronic scanning/probing measurement equipment; surface gauges; V-blocks; parallel bars; gauge blocks; dial indicators; optical and mechanical comparators; and go and no-go thread, ring, bore, and plug gauge to attain dimensions and maintain tolerances
Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment
Controls tools. Certifies work produced under the USAF Technical Order Program

This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing
The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching
Frequently handles, lifts, and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with assistance

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Model Maker without more than normal supervision
Comprehensive knowledge of a variety of conventional, computer numerical control (CNC) and 3-dimensional printing (AM) machine tools such as lathes, vertical, and horizontal boring mills; bench, plain, and universal milling machines; shapers; planers; internal and external grinders; thread cutters; and radial drills; and a variety of machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, angular drive heads, taper attachments, rotary tables, and others
Skill and ability in operating CNC machine tools through one complete cycle to manufacture the first part; proof dimensions; check sufficiency of programming, tooling, fixturing, and machine operations, edit programs and make the normal changes required; and recommend changes to programs on deficiencies noted; and in the use of precision measuring instruments and equipment such as Vernier calipers; height gauges; squares; protractors; inside, outside, and depth micrometers; surface gauges; 'V' blocks; parallel bars; internal and external micrometers, Vernier height and depth gauges, indicators, scales, and various standard and preset snap, plug, or ring gauges
Knowledge of various metals and other materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze, high carbon and alloy steels, chrome, nickel, titanium, nylon, rubber, plastics and Teflon, and of the effect and relationship of heat treating, annealing, plating, welding and other related work processes on machining operations in completing an assignment
Skill and ability in operating 3-dimensional Polymer/Metal printing (AM) machines
Performs material loading/unloading
Understands machine certification requirements and performs routine machine maintenance
Calibrates print heads and makes necessary adjustments to print quality parts
Checks parts for defects/ dimensional accuracy and adjusts machine characteristics to correct defects
Knowledge of advanced shop mathematics including plane geometry, the use of trigonometric functions and machinist handbook formulas used in laying out work and setting up machine tools, and of blueprints and their interpretation, program readouts and technical directives, the use of shop mathematics, and shop floor programming; and knowledge of the USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures
Knowledge of how to develop and fabricate special tools, fixtures, and jigs to hold, machine, fabricate, and assemble items with compound curves and intersecting compound angles
Skilled in using a variety of specialized and precise measuring devices such as super-micrometers, shadowgraphs, and a variety of specialized tools and fabricate equipment such as electrical discharge machines, jeweler's lathes, micro-soldering and welding equipment, and a variety of electronic tools and meters
Skill and ability in using conventional machine tools and their attachments to perform machining processes requiring special adaptation of the equipment or process for which they were not specifically designed; and in using special or improvised tools, fixtures, and setups to machine surfaces configurations such as curved surfaces requiring machine feeds in different planes simultaneously, surfaces having closely interrelated dimensions, or surfaces having unusual or compound angular relationships
