Power Unit Electronics Specialist

GM Performance Power Units is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Power Unit Electronics Specialist to join their elite engineering team in Concord, NC. This role focuses on the design, development, and optimization of high-performance electronic systems within Formula 1 Power Units, including power electronics and wiring harnesses.

Responsibilities

Develop, test, and optimize electronic components and control systems for F1 Power Unit applications, focusing on power electronics, energy recovery subsystems, and electrical interconnects
Design, document, and validate wiring harnesses and high-voltage (HV) cable assemblies, including schematic development and routing, ensuring compliance with stringent motorsport and FIA technical regulations
Use advanced 3D modeling tools to design wiring harness layouts that fit precisely within the PU packaging constraints while minimizing weight and maximizing reliability
Collaborate closely with electrical, software, mechanical, and systems engineers to integrate electronic modules and wiring systems seamlessly into the power unit architecture
Conduct bench testing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of power unit electronic assemblies and wiring harnesses under race-representative conditions
Implement firmware and software tools to support real-time control and monitoring of power electronics and hybrid systems
Ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of HV cable systems, including insulation ratings, shielding, and connector standards
Work closely with suppliers, manufacturing, and assembly teams to deliver high-quality electronic components, wiring harnesses, and cable assemblies on schedule
Perform root-cause analysis of electrical or wiring failures and implement corrective actions to enhance system reliability and performance
Support system validation, including on-car testing and data analysis to constantly improve electronic system behavior and robustness

Required

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline with a minimum of 2 years of experience
Minimum 5 years of experience in high-performance power electronics design, wiring harness and HV cable design, testing, or technical support, ideally within motorsport or aerospace sectors
Strong knowledge of power electronics devices such as inverters, converters, and energy storage interfaces
Proven experience designing wiring harnesses and high-voltage cable systems, including detailed schematic development and 3D routing
Proficiency with CAD tools for wiring design and 3D modeling (e.g., E3.series, Autodesk Inventor, Cableteque, or equivalent)
Hands-on experience with crimping, connector assembly, and wiring termination techniques suitable for high-vibration motorsport environments
Familiarity with electrical safety standards, insulation materials, and shielding best practices for high-voltage automotive systems
Excellent problem-solving skills with hands-on troubleshooting capabilities under demanding, fast-paced conditions
Strong communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment

Preferred

Advanced degree preferred
Experience developing or supporting firmware/software for control of electric/hybrid powertrain components preferred
Experience with embedded software development and real-time control system implementation
Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS) and energy recovery system (ERS) electronics hardware
Advanced knowledge of signal processing and sensor integration in power electronics systems
Prior exposure to additive manufacturing and miniaturization techniques for electronics packaging
