High Voltage Electrician (Substation)
The Southwestern Power Administration is seeking a High Voltage Electrician (Substation) to be part of an electrical substation crew responsible for the maintenance, operation, and construction of high-voltage substations and radio stations. The role involves ensuring compliance with technical specifications, conducting investigations of equipment failures, and executing preventative maintenance programs.

Responsibilities
Complies with the technical requirements, specifications, and design limits for all substation equipment with power flows, such as power circuit breakers, transformers, bus and cable, grounding systems, trench, and conduit systems, building and yard lighting systems, station service, station batteries, metal-clad switchgear, circuit interrupters, and motor-operated and manual disconnect and grounding switches
Conducts investigations of substation equipment failures and interruptions to ascertain cause of failure and/or interruptions
Uses technical documents and substation drawings, such as, but not limited to, equipment drawings, control board drawings, instruction books, tests records, and equipment records, to ascertain proper connection, operation, and maintenance of substation electrical equipment
Provides inspection of new installations and conducts performance tests of new equipment prior to acceptance for operations
Executes a comprehensive program of preventative maintenance for electrical systems within the substations, in accordance with standard procedures
Complies with policies and procedures, prepares work schedules, and coordinates equipment outages with the Division of Scheduling and Operations
Provides management support, operations, and maintenance by force account and materials forecast. Initiates material and equipment transportation to various work sites
Operates and maintains all types of equipment common to the electric utility trade including, but not limited to, multiple-drive vehicles, crane man lifts, compressors, boom trucks, winch trucks, and truck and trailer combinations
Contacts are with agency personnel, officials, and employees of other Federal agencies, and external customers including landowners, contractors, electricians, and representative of private utilities and like organizations. The purpose of contacts is to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts or to resolve operating problems. Contacts are usually working toward mutual goals and generally have cooperative attitudes
Perform other duties as required in daily work: such as assisting other crews

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National

If selected, you will be required to complete a questionnaire (OF-306) and are subject to a criminal background check to determine suitability for Federal employment before appointment
May be required to successfully complete a probationary/trial period
Position requires a climbing weight not-to-exceed 310 with all required gear
Personal maximum weight may not exceed 280 pounds at time of appointment
This position requires the ability to operate a Government vehicle
Incumbent must be at least 18 years of age, able to obtain and maintain Defensive Drivers certification and have a valid state driver's license
The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate vehicles of more than 26,000 pounds GVWR
If you are tentatively selected for this position, you will be required to have a physical examination that will determine whether you are qualified to perform the duties of the position
This position requires completion of an annual medical examination at Federal expense
You must test negative for illegal drugs before placement in the position, and will be subject to random drug testing thereafter
This position may be part of a Bargaining Unit
You must have journeyman-level ability in the duties of an High Voltage Electrician (Substation)

Ability to do the work of a High Voltage Electrician without more than normal supervision to include installing, constructing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment in high voltage switchyards, substations, communication facilities and power operations centers
The work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurrent bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; and recurrent lifting of moderately heavy items (over 75 pounds)
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress, such as working with high-voltage electrical equipment
Position may require accredited nationally recognized certification for fixed and swing boom cranes, aerial man-lifts, and/or material handling equipment
