Intern Engineering Support - Design Division - Austin, TX

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking interns for their Design Division. The role involves assisting with various engineering support tasks related to transportation projects, including design drafting, hydrology engineering, and data analysis.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Develops spreadsheets, databases, and other electronic documents in support of engineering design for transportation projects
Assists with 2D/3D design/drafting activities, including preparing and updating drawings for highway projects, 3D model reviews to verify geometric elements meet criteria, etc
Assists with hydrology and hydraulics engineering design and plan review for highway projects
Assists with reviews of engineering submittals, including preliminary bridge layouts, schematics, final design/construction drawings, and other associated engineering details and documents
Assists with the development of roadway geometric design and project development guidance and related tools
Assists with update of design manuals, engineering standards, specifications, etc
Assists in traffic and safety analysis for highway and intersection projects
Assists in surveying, remote sensing, and photogrammetry projects
Assists in landscape engineering and architectural design and plan review for highway projects
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Required

Must be enrolled in an engineering or related science degree program in an accredited college or university accepted by TX PELS
Must be at least 16 years of age, a student currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education to include a trade/vocational school
Employees at least 18 years of age with valid driver's license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools
Safety Impact Certificate
Use computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
Communicate effectively

Follow applicable safety standards, practices, and procedures
Protects sensitive and confidential information
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
Finger-pricking, pinching, typing; working primarily with finger rather than whole hand
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions
