Assistant Mechanic – Public Works

Responsibilities

Inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair City vehicles and equipment
Perform preventive maintenance, tune-ups, alignments, brake repairs, and major/minor overhauls
Service engines, hydraulics, alternators, radiators, starters, transmissions, heating/AC systems, and electrical components
Follow inspection checklists to ensure safety and reliability of all major components
Review work orders and complete documentation of all repairs and services
Install and repair vehicle accessories (radios, mirrors, heaters, wipers)
Maintain a clean and safe shop work environment
Test-drive vehicles after repairs to ensure proper function
Organize, plan, and prioritize work to meet operational deadlines
Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and other departments
Follow all City policies, safety procedures, and supervisor instructions
Assist with emergency management operations and after-hours call-outs when required
Maintain confidentiality of City information
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

High school diploma or GED
Two years experience as a mechanic
Valid Texas Class C driver license with a satisfactory driving record
Successful completion of required background checks and pre-employment screenings
Knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair practices, principles, and techniques
Knowledge of automotive tools, shop equipment, diagnostics, and repair methods
Knowledge of state and federal vehicle safety and inspection standards
Knowledge of shop safety rules, procedures, and occupational hazards
Skill in performing mechanical and electrical diagnostics and repairs
Skill in using computerized diagnostic tools and calibrating components
Skill in identifying mechanical problems and applying corrective actions
Skill in safely using power tools, hand tools, chemicals, and lubricants
Skill in reading and interpreting manuals, schematics, and specifications
Skill in using computers and software associated with repair documentation
Skill in effective written and verbal communication
Skill in managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines
Ability to diagnose and repair diverse equipment and vehicles
Ability to operate vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and effectively
Ability to work independently and use sound judgment within established guidelines
Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and wet conditions
Ability to understand and follow instructions, policies, and safety rules
Ability to respond after hours and during emergencies when required
Physical ability to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, lift, reach, climb, push, and pull
Physical ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds unassisted
Physical ability to work in noisy environments and around fumes, chemicals, dust, wildlife, and moving equipment
Physical ability to maintain coordination of eyes, hands, and feet for operating tools and vehicles
Physical ability to tolerate working outdoors in all weather conditions

Preferred

Texas Class B driver license preferred; may be required within six months of notice
