Responsibilities

Determine and execute the best method for obtaining biological specimens from patients of all ages (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) to ensure quality specimens for testing
Follow established productivity guidelines with minimal errors
Order appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers
Resolve unusual or unclear test orders by contacting the ordering provider; respond to requests for lab results and send scheduled reports
Interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection
Prepare aliquots of samples and shipping batches for transport within the hospital campus or to contracted laboratories following vendor protocols
Register, draw, and ship client specimens
Maintain a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations
Promote inter- and intradepartmental workflow through cooperation and effective handoffs
Maintain laboratory supply inventory and conserve resources by using equipment and supplies appropriately
Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot equipment problems to the full extent of ability
Practice proper patient identification verification; manage work queues to ensure accurate and complete registration including demographics, insurance, service date, ordering caregiver, and special flags
Actively participate in the laboratory quality plan/program (e.g., investigative reports, notification of delays)
Participate in the training of new staff and students by serving as a mentor and technical resource

Required

High School Diploma or equivalent
Specialized training in phlebotomy

Preferred

One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role, preferred
Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible), preferred
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification, preferred
