Hearst Magazines, through the Houston Chronicle, is seeking a Data Reporter who excels in finding and narrating stories with data in a dynamic newsroom environment. The role involves producing data-driven journalism focused on compensation, real estate, and demographics while collaborating with the Texas Hearst Data Team.

Responsibilities

Produce data- and graphics-focused journalism that’s centered on topics including compensation, real estate and demographics, in collaboration with other members of the Texas Hearst Data Team and the Houston Chronicle

Approach datasets with a healthy dose of skepticism and find trends and stories in the numbers

Write and document reproducible, bulletproof code for data analysis

Write audience-focused stories and build data visualizations

Support and further data literacy in the newsroom by leading data trainings

Required

Experience working collaboratively in a deadline-driven newsroom environment

Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects at the same time

Comfort with data visualization tools such as Datawrapper or Adobe Illustrator/ai2html

Working knowledge of Git and Github

Desire and ability to learn on the job

Preferred

Any experience with the following tools/systems is a plus:

Mapping tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS

APIs and web-scraping tools

Federal and Texas open-records law
