Mechanical Design Engineer Senior Specialist

Responsibilities

Developing high quality detailed design packages
Providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs
Providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant systems
Mentoring early career engineers and providing reviews and input into their designs
Preparing conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates
Preparing statements of work, design criteria, and title II engineering deliverables including preparation of calculations and analyses, construction specifications & drawings, and equipment specifications
Performing walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel
Interpreting, organizing, and executing assignments and engineering design for process piping, utility piping systems, high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration, exhaust systems, dehumidification, and air conditioning in support of nuclear and non-nuclear projects
Designing systems such as potable water and fire-protection supply systems, gases, acid and caustic fluids, brines, cryogenics, steam and condensate, hot and chilled water systems, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and vacuum systems
Designing duct systems, ventilation/exhaust systems, and the basic installation of mechanical HVAC equipment
Performing computer hydraulic (steady-state and transient) analysis, computer pipe stress analysis, and support selection/design

Required

Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience
OR a Master's degree in mechanical engineering with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA and at least 5 years relevant experience
OR a PhD in mechanical engineering with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA and at least 2 years of relevant experience
There is a minimum GPA requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript
Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire
In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities
Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status
The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709

Preferred

A Professional Engineering License (PE)
Knowledgeable in respective technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques
Demonstrated technical capabilities, leadership, and work ethic
Ability to work in a project team environment and communicate well with other disciplines, customers, and stakeholders
Ability to follow procedures and work within a rigorous work process
Ability to estimate, plan, and track progress for preparation of discipline deliverables
Good written and oral communications skills
Capable of handling classified information
