Surveyor/Highway Engineer

Sheboygan County is seeking a Surveyor/Highway Engineer to direct and supervise the County Highway Engineering Department. The role involves overseeing surveying, design, and construction of roadways, while ensuring compliance with statutory duties and providing engineering services to local governments.

Responsibilities

Duties as outlined in Chapter 41 of the Sheboygan County Code of Ordinances. Comply with Section 59.45 of the Statutes pertaining to the duties of the County Surveyor
Comply with Section 59.73; 59.74 of the Statutes pertaining to surveys and subdivisions of sections, and the perpetuation of section corner/landmarks
Comply with Section 59.72 of the Statutes pertaining to Land Information and the Land Information Office. Formulate and administer the County Land Modernization Program
Direct, coordinate, schedule and perform survey and design functions for the maintenance and reconstruction of roadways and cities within the county
Provide administrative and technical guidance to the Transportation Director for long range roadway construction programming
Negotiate highway right of way acquisitions for roadway improvements. This work entails preparation of relocation orders, preparation of deed and easement documents, title searches, knowledge of the appraisal process and their use in acquisitions, and continuing education in the acquisition process
Provide consultation, surveying, and engineering services to other county departments and local governments
Assist in the preparation of estimates for survey, design, and construction of roadways and related facilities
Coordinates utility work on various projects
Overseeing maintenance, training, and purchasing of machine control equipment
Perform bridge inspections, keeps the Transportation Director informed of bridge replacements, rule changes, and bridge maintenance activities
Keep accurate records and prepare detailed written and oral reports
Public speaking at government meetings and project meetings when needed
Performs other duties as assigned

Required

Thorough knowledge of the laws, codes and regulations pertaining to construction and maintenance of highways and highway structures
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of highway or civil engineering
Considerable knowledge of engineering costs
Graduation from a college or university of recognized standing with major courses in civil engineering
Registration as a professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin or eligibility therefore. Comply with biannual continuing education requirements to maintain this license
Certification as a registered land surveyor. Comply with biannual continuing education requirements to maintain this license
Bridge inspector license
