The NYC Department of Social Services is seeking an Assistant General Counsel for the Employment Law Unit, which provides comprehensive legal counsel on labor and employment matters. The role involves managing the Unit's operations, overseeing litigation, and providing strategic legal guidance to senior leadership.

Responsibilities

Direct and manage the day-to-day executive operations of the ELU and supervises all Unit staff

Review and resolve highly complex EEO litigation and investigative issues

Manage and oversee the prosecution of misconduct and incompetence cases filed before the Citywide Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH)

Manage the strategic defense of discrimination complaints filed before Federal, State, and City EEO enforcement agencies

Litigate the most complex and high-profile discipline and EEO cases which are beyond the expertise of subordinate attorney staff

Ensure full regulatory and internal compliance

Required

Admission to the New York State Bar

Four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar

Eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment

Preferred

Litigation experience needed

Ability to investigate allegations of misconduct, as well as, discrimination claims

Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to handle multiple high-level matters simultaneously
