Maintenance Technician II - Second Shift

The City of Roanoke is seeking an experienced, self-motivated individual to serve as a Fleet Maintenance Technician II to perform skilled mechanical work on specialized construction and automotive equipment. The successful candidate will diagnose, adjust, repair and service a wide variety of medium and heavy automotive and specialized equipment.

Responsibilities

Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of maintenance, construction, and utilities activities
Performs skilled work in the operation or repair of several types of motorized equipment or maintenance of facilities and/or equipment
Discuss job requirements and receives detailed instructions from supervisor
Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions
Makes and adjusts work assignments
Requisitions necessary equipment and materials
Maintains accurate log sheets and checklists
Operates tractor trailer, street sweeper, bulldozer, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, excavator, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repair
Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
Inspect new and existing stormwater infrastructure using an onboard computer system to remotely operate a camera and tractor system and overlay information on screen, to be recorded on a laptop for later printing and importing into an asset management database
Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of medium and heavy automotive and specialized equipment including diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus and aerial truck hydraulic systems
Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
Requisitions parts and materials used in the repair of motor equipment
Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (i.e. water cooler, fist aid kit, safety flares, etc)
Performs journey-level trades work in one of the following areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding
Performs carpentry work, building cabinets, benches, barricades, and other items
Trains and instructs subordinates
Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law
Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices
Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment
Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards
Safety first. Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements
Follows established safety procedures
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
Supervise a small work crew. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws

Required

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
one to three years related experience and/or training in repairing automotive and light/heavy power-driven equipment
equivalent combination of education and experience
Required to qualify for certification as a State Inspector
Must have a Class B CDL
Two ASE certifications required within 1 year of employment

Preferred

State Inspection license
Class B CDL

Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between participating in a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program.
Defined Benefit Pension Plan: Normal retirement after 55th birthday, and when combination of age and creditable service equals 85.
Hybrid Program: Provides the characteristics of the traditional pension plan with that of a deferred compensation plan.
Retirement Health Savings Plan: All employees contribute 1% of salary to a 401(h) health savings account.
Deferred Compensation: Employees may voluntarily contribute salary deferred dollars into a City Sponsored 457 Plan.
Flexible Spending Account: Allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars from their pay checks to pay for child care and/or medical and dental expenses.
Virginia College Savings Plan: Two plans to choose from at a reduced application fee.
Employee Health Services: The City employee health services provides medical care for employees, retirees, and eligible spouses.
