USDA-ARS Fellowship on Physiological Tolerances of Beneficial and/or Pest Insects

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is offering a research fellowship opportunity with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. The fellow will conduct research on the physiological tolerances of beneficial and/or pest insects, focusing on how abiotic factors influence their survival and distribution in various ecosystems.

Responsibilities

Quantify thermal tolerance and desiccation resistance of beneficial and/or pest insects
Measure microclimate of managed and natural ecosystems throughout the growing season
Assess how multiple stressors impact insects in the lab and field
Perform fundamental and applied research to better understand the physiological tolerances of beneficial and/or pest insects
Develop or enhance knowledge and skills to evaluate how insects respond to environmental stress
Conduct physiological assays to measure thermal tolerance and/or desiccation resistance
Develop methods for quantifying thermal microclimates using sensors, data loggers, and thermal images
Conduct lab experiments examining how nutrition affects performance and physiological traits
Conduct field experiments quantifying behavior of insects

Required

Currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields
Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
Degree: Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree

Preferred

Background in biology, ecology, entomology, or physiology
Experience with and/or rearing insects
Experience running physiological assays and lab experiments
Experience with sensors, thermal images, data loggers, etc
Ability to perform independently and in a team environment
