Staff Attorney & Clinical Supervisor

National Legal Aid & Defender Association is a non-profit legal services organization committed to racial justice and community healing. They are seeking a Staff Attorney/Clinical Supervisor to represent youth in legal matters and supervise law students while engaging in systemic change efforts.

Responsibilities

Represent students in school district expulsions and expulsion appeals, limited related special education matters, and district and state administrative complaints
Represent youth and adult clients in juvenile record sealing cases in juvenile court
Teach, train, and supervise Berkeley Law clinical students and summer law student interns
Attend in-person client appointments, court proceedings, and engage in-person fieldwork to support our clients. Fieldwork typically includes visits to our youth clients’ homes, schools, juvenile detention facilities, and public spaces such as parks and libraries
Partner with the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office and other juvenile defense attorneys to advocate for clients in juvenile court
Engage with community partners and statewide coalitions to confront the criminalization and incarceration of youth, school push-out practices, civil rights violations, and the school-prison nexus more broadly
Complete case management tasks
Additional projects as assigned by the EDJY Program Co-Directors

Required

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
Active membership in the California State Bar
Experience in juvenile law, education law, or related fields
Commitment to racial justice and community healing
Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary advocacy
Experience teaching or supervising law students or interns
Ability to engage in fieldwork and in-person client appointments
Strong communication and advocacy skills
Ability to work collaboratively with community partners and coalitions
Willingness to engage in case management tasks
Flexibility to take on additional projects as assigned
