College Intern - Engineering Summer 2026

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is responsible for maintaining the state's transportation system. The College Intern will assist with various planning, engineering, and environmental activities, gaining real-world experience while contributing to important projects.

Responsibilities

Receive training and assist with a variety of planning activities involving traffic engineering studies
Conduct traffic counts; collect and review field data; verify sign locations and pavement marking locations
Photograph sites of proposed projects; research and analyze accidents and traffic signal warrants; participate in field reviews and project scoping
Assist in the scanning of plans and documents in the permits database
Assist in the processing of legislation issues and MPO matters
Assist in the Environmental area concerning the selection of potential noise walls for study, take noise readings and update the database
Perform field work on selected safety locations including speed studies, pavement marking, sign and signal location
Enter and manipulate database for environmental noise walls, safety and congestion locations and bridge conditions
Receive training in PC based and mainframe CADD systems (i.e. MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer)
Collect and review roadway, culvert, and bridge field data required for the preparation of highway construction plans
Assist project manager or designer with the design, development, and review of various portions of highway construction plans
Assist project surveyor on projects, receive training in the operation and maintenance of survey instruments
Perform miscellaneous duties to facilitate operational efficiency of work unit
Receive training in proper procedures for inspection of work being done by contractors
Assist project engineer in the inspection of bituminous plants, perform tests on concrete and soils, and any required surveying to verify field measurements
Perform support functions in record keeping, maintain accurate data of work performed, organize materials, and compile information to assist in report preparation
Assist the Environmental staff with projects & documentation by utilizing the computer & related software to research information

Required

MUST BE ENROLLED IN A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY PROGRAM AND IN GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING. (Civil Engineering)
Must show proof of valid driver's license to operate state vehicle
