Staff Android Engineer (freelance/perm)

DNA.inc is a dynamic international digital consultancy specializing in building platforms and products. They are seeking a Staff Android Engineer to lead a team in developing high-quality Android applications for a leading payments company, focusing on technical vision and collaboration with client teams.

Responsibilities

Own and shape the technical vision, architecture and engineering practices across multiple Android projects/teams
Define shared libraries, coding standards, modular architecture, CI/CD pipelines and release processes
Lead cross-team architecture and platform decisions: scalability, performance, maintainability, modularization
Mentor and coach engineers; perform system-level code reviews; raise code quality and consistency across teams
Collaborate with product managers, designers, QA and other stakeholders to align technical roadmap with business goals, prioritize platform initiatives, evaluate trade-offs
Investigate and pilot new Android frameworks, tools, or architectural approaches; drive adoption and best practices
Monitor and improve engineering health: reduce technical debt, improve delivery speed, maintain long-term stability as user base and codebase grow

Required

Have 10+ years of professional Android (or mobile) development experience, including Kotlin and modern Android practices (coroutines, reactive programming, modularization, etc.)
Demonstrate a track record working with large or multiple codebases, ideally across several teams or projects
Exhibit strong architectural design and system-level thinking: able to design scalable, maintainable, modular Android applications; document and drive architectural decisions
Know how to mentor and coach other engineers; strong code review skills
Be able to work cross-functionally (product, design, operations) and influence without formal authority
Leverage a strategic mindset: able to anticipate long-term challenges (scale, performance, technical debt) and propose effective solutions
Demonstrate a passion for engineering quality, tooling, maintainability, and team-wide standards

Preferred

Ideally based in or around New York City. Although this role is primarily a remote or hybrid position, periodic on-site presence with our client will be expected
Bonus: experience in CI/CD, release pipelines, modular architecture, or cross-platform mobile strategy; familiarity with domain-specific areas (e.g. payments, media/streaming) is a plus
