The Finger Lakes Healthcare System has 1 vacancy for a Maintenance Supervisor of the Building Unit in the Engineering Department at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center. The incumbent is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the complete carpentry/masonry/paint unit systems.

Responsibilities

Primary duty is to organize employees into a productive unit and accomplish work in accordance with established policies of the Engineering Service
Directly responsible for the supervision of the employees of the Building Unit, which consists of the Carpentry, Mason and Paint Shops. These shops under his direction include approximately 12 full time non-supervisory permanent journeymen, tradesmen and laborers. Incumbent is also responsible for as many as 10 temporary employees assigned either full or part time under the Compensated Work Therapy program, or as temporary Engineering staff
Applying knowledge of engineering principles and concepts of one of the engineering specialties related to building structure design and construction, with a definite familiarity with related disciplines
Applying knowledge of construction practices in general and apply this to technical design, specification writing and cost estimating
Responsible for coordination of many ongoing station level construction projects at several simultaneous sites for which his/her trades take the lead
Applying knowledge of field practices and techniques in actual Building Unit construction trades (Carpentry, Masonry, Painting, etc.)
Must keep up-to-date on new developments in construction practices in order to incorporate the latest and best designs in construction projects
Reading and interpreting blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications and relate those to planned goal of construction projects
To do drafting and sketching, either as final product or to pass information onto Project Engineers or Engineering Technicians for final production
Apply knowledge of engineering design as presented by National Electrical Code; International Building Code; NFPA Fire and Safety Codes; Life Safety Codes; Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering Handbooks and other essential reference materials to be utilized in performance of duties
Work with the Engineering Service staff, Care Line Managers, Department Managers, or their designees, construction contractor representatives and vendors
Occasionally acts in the capacity of the Construction and Maintenance Manager and/or the Chief Engineer in the absence thereof, when assigned by either party
Responsible for annual updating and reviewing of performance standards and position description of self and employees supervised
Promotes the participation of employees in management programs such as the employee suggestion, quality assurance and cost reduction, goal sharing and goal oriented programs
Participates in the selection of new full time and temporary employees, promotion or reassignment of employees of the Building Unit, justification for disciplinary action and plans for improving work performance of employees
Initiates recommendation for promotion and/or training needs. Counsels employees, resolves informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and union representatives and initiates disciplinary action as required
Schedules and approves time and leave for the Building Unit and keeps employees informed of proposed work or changes in Engineering Service regarding housekeeping, conduct, safety and other issues
Operating and managing a personal computer system. Utilize spreadsheets, electronic mail and other PC applications
Performs other related duties as assigned

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs
The incumbent must be in good physical condition, capable of responding to emergency situations
The incumbent must be capable of accessing all equipment locations in the Medical Center and controls as needed, and be able to do any necessary bending, lifting, walking, climbing and other strenuous physical movements required by a tradesman
A portion of the Supervisor's work is performed in an office environment, however, when required to operate and/or perform repairs, the incumbent must be alert to the life-taking hazards of working near high pressure steam, working from elevated platforms, use of highly combustible or explosive materials and gases, working in high temperature confined areas and the use of highly toxic agents
He/she may be exposed to dust, dirt, soot and noise in the performance of duties
