Student Intern Communications

NEOGOV is seeking a Student Intern in Communications for the Town of Fairfield. This role is designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate college students for professional careers by providing practical work experience in communications and administrative functions within municipal government.

Responsibilities

Assists in general administrative and communications functions for the purpose of developing a working knowledge of the Communications function in municipal government through the following: Educational Outreach to Residents via Email
Learns and uses Canva design features
Learns and uses Constant Contact design features
Locates or provides photographs
Meets with a variety of Town department heads, and board and committee members
Researches Town departments, boards, and activities
Writes magazine-style articles to be sent to Town residents via email
Website Updates
Formats documents to update Press pages
Learns website editing functions
Writes content to update key website pages
Public Outreach Campaigns
Attends meetings and takes meeting minutes
Creates Social Media campaigns using Canva
Participates in public relations campaigns
Schedules participation at Town events
Sends press releases
Updates sponsors via email
Updates and provides content to Safe Streets Alliance website pages and other materials
Works with Fairfield Safe Streets Alliance Committee on detail-driven tasks
Social Media/Graphics Development
Assists in documenting events; provides photography and video; and edits for social platforms
Uses Canva to develop social media posts for a variety of Town events, public meetings, and religious/cultural holidays
Other assignments:
Assists with analyses and data for reports
Becomes familiar with the operational responsibilities of assigned departments
Maintains a high level of ethics and maintain the public trust
Performs entry-level professional administrative work, basic research and analysis
Serves as a liaison between community constituents and the elected officials
Serve as reliable in office point of contact for various assigned tasks
Perform related duties as required

Required

Current matriculation in an accredited Associate's, Bachelor's or advanced degree program determined by the Director of Human Resources or designee to be appropriate preparation for employment in the designated town department and/or functional area
Interest contributing to and participating in local governmental affairs
Interest in or becoming familiar with local government and community needs such as community engagement, public outreach efforts and media relations, etc
Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position
Knowledge of Constant Contact, Canva, YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Instagram, or ability to learn
Knowledge of principles, theories and concepts of appropriate discipline and ability to apply them in practical situations
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Organizational skills, and ability to pay attention to detail
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding business-related files, reports and conversations, within the provision of Freedom of Information Act and other applicable State and Federal statutes and regulations
Ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines
Ability to organize and coordinate a variety of special projects and requests in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work well and interact with members of the public as well as members of the Town's various departments, Department Heads and elected officials with professionalism and tact
Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
