Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Education Coordinator)

Responsibilities

Develops policies, recommends policies, and directs a formal educational program
Plans and conducts programs in course design and teaching techniques for all instructional personnel. Evaluates bench instruction to assure program uniformity and continuity
Trains and evaluates a variety of individuals (medical technology/medical laboratory science students and employees, physicians, residents, nurses) in laboratory medicine
Evaluates activities and recommends policy changes to correct deficiencies and improve the program. Ensures compliance with educational program guidance/regulations in order to maintain accreditation of the program
Analyzes emerging trends and technology and adopts appropriate methods in local programs to meet agency goals
Develops curriculums for program participants. Develop recruitment materials, training materials, evaluation instruments, and other program materials
Prepares affiliate student schedules and arranges lectures with educators/instructors
Maintains student records including attendance, evaluation, progress records and an accurate file of training records for each student for future employment
Provides authoritative representation and interaction with cooperating or affiliated universities or colleges, resource organization, and state and federal officials in order to coordinate program goals, objectives, and policies
Establishes, negotiates, and maintains affiliation agreements
Provides input into budget preparation for the educational program. Maintains the budget for the educational program
Maintains knowledge of and complies with the federal regulations associated with the Clinical Lab Improvement Act of 1988

A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
Candidates must meet one of the certification options: (a) Generalist certification as an MLS given by ASCP BOC or AMT, (b) Generalist certification as an MT given by ASCP BOR or AMT, (c) Categorical certification or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must possess at least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11), which is directly related to the position to be filled
Your experience must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of medical technology concepts, principles, and practices sufficient to support an educational program for students and continuing education programs for the staff
Knowledge of the education program's affiliation agreements and accreditation requirements
Knowledge of a particular specialty or function such as blood banking or molecular diagnostics, to be recognized as a technical authority for instruction
Knowledge of training methods to conduct continuing education sessions for staff development
Skill in using educational design, development, evaluation techniques, and teaching methods
