The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to delivering a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system across the State of Wyoming. They are currently seeking a highly motivated and qualified Engineer II to join their team in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to contribute to highway projects from inception through design, construction, and contract completion.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Perform engineering tasks related to highway projects throughout all phases, including design, construction, and contract management
Work closely with the Resident Engineer and other team members to ensure timely and successful project delivery
Support the preparation and review of plans, specifications, and contracts for various transportation projects
Assist in ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards
Issues, reviews, comments, and revise plan sets
Reviews and approves or rejects project submittals/permits
Reviews and updates forms and documentation procedures regarding construction activities and pay quantities
Inspects and assures projects/facilities are completed according to plans, specifications, design criteria, and budgetary constraints
Compiles and submits engineering recommendations and summaries for designing various projects/facilities with varying levels of complexity
Conducts extensive research of existing and evolving technologies
Provides technical guidance, advice, and oversight
Works in direct contact with contractors and subcontractors daily in the management of projects under construction
Deals with landowners, traveling public, local, county, state, and federal government entities in the same context
Performs field inspections, laboratory testing, materials analysis, and quality control
Develops engineering models, conducts studies, makes cost estimates, and submits reports, summaries, and other required documentation
Reviews and evaluates the work of assigned engineering technicians
Performs inspections and testing to ensure the contractor is constructing the project according to plans, specifications, etc
Provide the contractor with the necessary information to construct a project (showing a project and interpreting plans)
Calculates and documents quantities for payment to the contractor
Examines and verifies numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry
Resolves geometric and trigonometric problems encountered during the process of making detailed engineering drawings
Review construction plans and verify that these are in accordance with designated specifications and other requirements
Conduct field engineering surveys, including operating a level, operating a total station, GPS, and make decisions to solve problems
Checks and verifies the accuracy of detailed project drawings and makes corrections in drawings if necessary
Design preliminary work, calculating land areas, earth forms, circular curves, material quantities, and other qualitative measurements using geometric and trigonometric computations
Trains other personnel in engineering and surveying, and trains personnel on proper fieldwork documentation techniques
Coordinate with the contractor, other agencies, and the public when a project impacts them
Oversees moderate to major construction projects by documenting pay quantities, directing the work schedule of subordinates, and working with a contractor for quality control
Ensures materials sampling and testing are performed properly; audits material summaries for QA/QC purposes
Prepares water agreements, materials agreements, and other necessary agreements
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)
0-3 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Engineer I
Engineer in Training (EIT) License or Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) Required
Valid Driver's License
QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete
Knowledge of authoritative reference materials in the field of engineering
Knowledge of surveying and surveying instruments and measurement and testing equipment, and systems
Knowledge of complex algorithms used in mathematical computer models to recognize the theory as the basis of their use
Knowledge of construction methods and processes, project scheduling, cost estimating procedures, and material quantity takeoffs
Knowledge of scientific and/or technical research practices
Knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, and practices of engineering
Knowledge of computers, calculators, survey equipment, and testing equipment is constantly
Knowledge of contemporary practices in road construction contracts
Knowledge of analyzing a situation and, based on education, experience, policies, and specifications, developing a solution and then implementing the solution
Knowledge of word processors, spreadsheets, and other computer programs
Ability to interpret plans and specifications based on sound engineering principles
Skills in engineering calculation and accounting procedures
Skills in interpersonal relations and communications
Skills in oral and written communication
Skills in decision-making and direction of work activities
Skills in making engineering calculations, highway construction planning, and design
Knowledge of WYDOT policies and procedures and engineering principles related to highway design and construction
Ability to sit/stand and operate equipment for long periods
Work outdoors for extended periods in adverse environmental conditions
Work around heavy machinery
Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
Physical Ability: Bending, stooping, and lifting to fifty (50) pounds; safely lifting and moving necessary materials from one point to another
