Correctional Program Specialist (Training Instructor)

Responsibilities
Delivers a wide variety of courses in correctional procedures, policies, and techniques. The subject matter is complex, constantly changing, and often controversial
Required to develop and teach basic, advanced and specialized programs. These classes are heterogeneous in nature, comprised of employees with widely different bases of experience and drawn from a wide range of specialties including medical services (doctors, dentists, psychiatrists), clerical specialists, correctional officers, secretaries, business office personnel, food service employees, unit management employees, etc
Serves as a subject matter expert to the field locations, which requires a broad range of knowledge and experience related to Bureau of Prisons policy and procedure, as well as demonstration of sound correctional practices
Qualification
Required
U.S. Citizenship is Required
You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level
Specialized experience is directly related experience that included substantial involvement with a correctional program and provided a thorough knowledge of correctional techniques
Experience in meeting and dealing with people that demonstrated the ability to work effectively with inmates and associates in a correctional environment
Experience must have also demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully
Understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions
A thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution's internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures
Training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs and maintaining high standards or work objectives
Experience in developing and teaching basic, advanced, and specialized programs and creating lesson plans to support the classes presented
Experience in tailoring presentations to the academic and experience level of a specific class
Experience designing test questions, performance demonstrations, and exercises to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom presentations
Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation
All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks
Current Federal Law Enforcement Employees must have three years of law enforcement coverage gained in a primary law enforcement position by the closing date of the vacancy announcement
Completion of the mandatory courses in 'Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase I and Phase II' is required for secondary law enforcement position(s)
A mobility statement is required for this position
You must agree to relocate anywhere at the convenience of the Bureau of Prisons upon completion of your tenure
You will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated
