The Mechanical System Engineer position requires a subject matter expert to provide technical oversight for mechanical utility distribution systems, troubleshoot technical issues, and develop strategic improvement plans.

Responsibilities
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned utility system(s)
Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the system design, configuration, and operation
Develop a long range strategic plan for improvements to assigned utility system(s)
Participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements
Support resolution of unplanned events
Develop and maintain critical system metrics
Participate in project design and implementation process for system related projects
Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Extensive knowledge of piping principles, centrifugal pumps and water distribution systems
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned utility system(s)
Ability to provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
Ability to produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the system design, configuration, and operation
Ability to develop a long range strategic plan for improvements to assigned utility system(s)
Ability to participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements
Ability to support resolution of unplanned events
Ability to develop and maintain critical system metrics
Ability to participate in project design and implementation process for system related projects
Ability to oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
Preferred
Mechanical Engineering degree with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) working towards PE registration
Knowledge of ASME codes and experience with heavy industrial mechanical systems
Shipyard/Nuclear facilities experience
Knowledge of NFPA codes and standards
