USDA-ARS Metabolomics for Better Barley, Malt, and Beer
The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, which focuses on agricultural research. The selected intern will conduct research on barley metabolomics, identifying compounds that influence flavor profiles in beer and providing recommendations for barley growers and malt producers.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Identify compounds that contribute to specific flavor profiles in beer, and determine the relevant biochemical pathways in barley, field microbes, and/or brewing yeasts
Use metabolite markers to model traits of interest to barley breeders, growers, and malt producers
Identify allelopathic compounds released from barley that inhibit germination
Provide commercial brewers and distillers more detailed malt metabolite profile information to help in their malt selection for their production processes
Assess the utility of non-chemical seed treatments to accelerate germination
Provide growers with Nitrogen and Sulfur management recommendations based on metabolite profiles
