Responsibilities
Teach courses in the Paralegal Studies program
Develop and evaluate curricula appropriate to the different learning needs of students as well as develop student learning outcomes
Provide an equitable classroom environment that promotes learning for every student
Use and keep abreast of current pedagogies and technologies that are effective in a diverse classroom
Consult with students during regularly-scheduled office hours
Perform other professional duties as required by contract or divisional and institutional needs. A portion of the teaching assignment may consist of evening or weekend classes
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree(s) or higher specifically in legal assisting (paralegal studies), and at least two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment OR Associate degree(s) specifically in legal assisting (paralegal studies) and at least six years of directly related professional experience OR the equivalent
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom
Successful experience in teaching or evidence of preparation to teach the full range of college paralegal studies courses
Possession of a certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program
Active member of the State Bar of California in good standing
Teach theoretical concepts and practical skills needed for paralegal employment
Commitment to and proficiency in creating curricula and methods of delivery that reflect present department standards and practices
Training and/or history of effective interaction with students at the basic and developmental levels
Use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter
Motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
Develop student learning outcomes and assessments, as well as program review, for paralegal courses
Expand the use of technology appropriate to the subject areas of the assignment, including distance education
Collaborate in college-wide and departmental activities to assess and improve student learning outcomes
Commitment to the role and purpose of the community college, including the mission and values of the District's colleges
Use teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become critical thinkers and independent learners
Desire to work collaboratively with faculty members and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities
Preferred
Possession of a J.D. or L.L.B. degree
