Assistant Project Engineer (Geotechnical) II

Responsibilities
Solves complex problems and calculations, using engineering formulas and skills
Evaluates research by others and writes reports
Assists the Project Engineer in the preparation of proposal estimates of time and expenses required to complete the project
Assists the Project Engineer in scheduling staffing requirements for field projects
Assists the Project Engineer in supervising and instructing, as needed, the responsibilities of field personnel on projects assigned to them
Develops and maintains a schedule and budget for the assigned engineering project
Provides reports on the status of project milestones and adjusts schedules accordingly
Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget
Identifies project staffing requirements and coordinates staffing with supporting organization managers
Coordinates preparation and delivery of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages
Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems
Participates in the integration of technical activities
Evaluates and presents changes for design, specifications, drawing releases, reports, etc to the Project Engineer and /or Project manager for approval
Prepares interim and completion project reports
Interfaces with customers to provide project status reports and ensure customer needs are met
Provides status and progress reports to customer, project team, and management
Performs site inspection to monitor progress/conformance to specs and procedures
Designs portions of a project
Makes calculations, using engineering formulas and skills
Instructs drafters how to reduce designs into completed drawings
Conducts routine geotechnical engineering laboratory checks
Leads concrete and rebar inspection testing
Performs research and writes reports
Prepares samples of materials for laboratory testing
Uses computer to run standard programs to solve engineering problems
Performs routine laboratory tests to determine various design parameters
Classifies soils according to standard types
Applies geological knowledge to engineering problems encountered in construction projects, such as dams, tunnels, and large buildings
Prepares geologic reports and maps, interprets research data, and recommends further study or action
Conducts or participates in environmental studies and prepares environmental reports
Directs drilling of exploratory borings and wells
Oversees installation of monitoring wells in accordance with state and federal requirements
Collects or supervises collection of soil and groundwater samples for analysis of chemical composition
Determines direction of groundwater flow based on review of historical records and site specific data
Determines the nature and extent of contamination in soil and groundwater at environmental sites
Participates in decision making regarding research priorities and provides information on feasibility of prospective projects
Plans schedule of research according to company’s or contracting organization’s timetable and establishes daily or weekly routines necessary to meet project timetable
Reviews project proposal or plan to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project
Supervises field work and performs field work when needed
Establishes work plan and staffing for each phase of project and arranges for recruitment or assignment of project personnel
Confers with project staff to outline workplan and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority
Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget
Supervises and delegates assignments to staff
Oversees staff’s daily activities to ensure it is correct and complete
Reviews status reports prepared by project personnel and modifies schedules or plans as required
Prepares project reports for management, client, or others
Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems
Coordinates project activities with activities of government regulatory or other governmental agencies
Identifies the potential for new projects and seeks opportunities to promote the company’s services on an ongoing basis
Travels 25% up to 75% of the time which may be out of state
Qualification
Required
Ability to review and understand plans, specs, and reports including site, grading, utility, foundation, details, structural, drawings, architectural, grading, federal, state and local regulations
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a minimum of 3-5 years of field or related experience where a PE license counts towards that related experience, a bachelor's degree in a related field, and demonstrates ability to meet the requirements of the job as set forth in this description
40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification
Valid Driver's License and possess reliable transportation to access job sites
Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of solid geometry and trigonometry
Able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
Proficient or familiarity with AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, NitroPro, GSLOPE, KeyWall, Rocscience, MS Word, Excel, Adobe
Position requires ability to use tools such as a lump hammer, shovel, hand auger, Nuclear Density Gauge
Preferred
Previous construction experience is preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred or have the ability to become licensed within 2 years of being in this position
Registered Professional Engineer (PE) preferred or have the ability to become licensed within 2 years of being in this position
ACI/NICET/NJ DCA Special Inspector and Nuclear Densometer certification a plus
