Responsibilities
Evaluate vehicles, subsystems, and/or components for noise and vibration performance – both subjective and objectives assessments
Sets up and operates test and data collection devices (sound recording, accelerometers, etc.) and measurement tools to test effects of calibration and hardware changes on noise and vibration. Work is done on test track and/or in specialized test facilities (dynamometers, wind tunnel, shaker rigs, water test chambers and other)
Develop technical solutions to noise issues – propose design changes to components and subsystems. Prove solutions work through testing and evaluations of experimental versions. Work with assembly plant or suppliers to implement changes. Evaluate production version of solutions proposed by design groups and/or suppliers
Develop and execute vehicle testing plan to optimize performance while balancing with mass and cost considerations. Plan must meet timing needs defined by program
Work jointly with other vehicle integration areas, SMT, and the Lead Development Engineer to balance vehicle needs – mass, fuel economy, ride and handling, manufacturing, safety, etc
Perform data analysis of measurements (frequency analysis, modal vibration analysis, etc.) LMS, MATLAB, and Head Acoustics are commonly used
Work jointly with analytical engineers to apply math models to guide testing and development. Use test data to correlate models to reality and make them more accurate
Supports assembly plant during vehicle launch to resolve issues with performance of production vehicles
Travels on occasional test trips to other parts of the USA or globally to evaluate performance or support global testing at GM, 3rd party, or customer facilities
This work varies at different phases of the development program as a vehicle is taken from initial concept and planning through prototype development and finally to validation / customer testing and start of production at the assembly plant
Qualification
Required
Bachelor in Engineering, Technology, Applied Physics, or related technical or science disciplines
5+ years related job experience – any vehicle performance roles, vehicle test, vehicle calibration or validation experience
Must be flexible and willing to take on assignments outside of core responsibilities - desire to learn new integration areas & support other areas of vehicle development as workload allows
Understanding of the general principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex
High level of oral/written communication skills
Ability to work effectively within teams. Good interpersonal skills – developing vehicles is a team sport
Self-motivated and directed, wants to learn
